• I have been down lately, things aren’t going well. I am neither sad nor happy, my 5-year-old relationship, my broken dreams, my struggles and all the things that are trying to test me the hardest way.

Honestly speaking, I have felt that my life is empty but it isn’t sad. Times like that come to me whenever I get to re-assess myself and the things that I have been up to. I have never blamed my parents for the emptiness, not even the slightest thought of it came into my senses. My life as a child was sad and empty, despite that, I tried my best to become stronger and have been looking at things positively.

I used to hate the rain, back then, I was the only child my age who wasn’t allowed to go out and bathe in the rain and join my siblings, cousins and neineighbours, until later on, I found a way to feel the rain without having to go out. It’s that little thing that has taught me to find ways through the impossible. I was jealous of how they were laughing while running around soaking wet and playing tag under the rain.

I became even more patient as a kid, I have never thrown tantrums for not getting what I wanted for I was never allowed to show interest or want something apart from what I was given. There were so many things that I learned when I was young, like still eating properly despite being sick and my head heavy and groggy.

To put it simply, I was deprived of feeling what a child would normally feel. Of course, I am not the only one who happened to experience a traumatic past. I’m writing this to share something that might be relatable to others and could somehow help them analyze their own stories.

I have never had fun at school, apart from being an introverted child. I was always cautious not to become a normal child who would run around and do silly things. I tried that once, from first to third grade. My teachers would tell my mother and I always got reprimanded and banned from doing this and that. My older siblings, four of them, were all honour students at that school. Understandably, two things might have occurred in my mother’s thoughts. One, I should try harder and become an achiever. Two, if I can’t do it. At least I must be at my best behaviour not to embarrass my siblings or my parents.

When I was in High School, I became to sole manager of my school life. Still, I was not allowed to have fun. I was always the house-school kind of child, with no extracurriculars, otherwise, my mother wouldn’t talk to me for a week if I joined a club or participated in school activities. At college, it was the same.

Those things that I have grown with, taught me that I only have two options. One, become a problematic child, rebel and cause my family some problems. Two, become an independent child who could still do better despite rejection and being ignored. I chose the latter I guess, I did my best and I got my self a degree and a diploma.

    Was I happy?

I thought I was, I saw my parents very happy back then when I graduated from the university. After two years, I realized. I was like a person who drank an excessive amount of liquor, my life was quite good since I had made my parents happy and proud but I was suffering from a hangover. I was very happy fulfilling what they wished me to fulfil, become a good daughter by being submissive and obedient. I got drunk, and one morning I just woke up feeling heavy with my head underwater.

Be responsible…this was the line my mother gave me and I made it through without causing them any trouble cause I was warned that she would never come to my aide if I caused trouble of any kind if she got called.

I’m happy…a lie I made myself believe. Just so I could get through the emotional crisis that I went through, without anyone to confide in and share my sadness. I knew for sure, it grew inside me. The void in my heart is even bigger than the dreams I have built for myself. It was huge enough that no matter how much I laughed and smiled and thought of positive things, that void was cruel enough to remind me that I was lonely and sad.

I tried to grow bigger dreams, but unfortunately, even when I was already an adult I didn’t get the chance to be treated like a person good enough to bring a dream to reality. I thought I have already been happy. But Nah, I still have moments where I sit in silence and just realize how broken my heart was and how sad my soul is.

I am beaming with positivity yet intoxicatingly overwhelmed despite all the effort. I can still feel the void inside me. I got drunk with all the liquor being offered, they tasted bitter at first but once I got used to the taste. It tasted sweet but surprisingly intoxicating enough to bring me down at my lowest.

My life is like a drunken person’s, and I thought that taking all those bitter drinks from them and pretending it tasted sweetk would make me happy as well. Surprisingly, that longing I had back when I was a child and the thought of just forgetting all the sadness as I have grown into an adult would somehow bring me pure joy. Until I realize, from time to time. That intoxicating taste of my past have brought me the positivity I needed to get over with my sadness and to help me look at life in a brighter perspective.

    Future…

While I was writing this, I had received insults twice the day before and another realization hit me. I started learning my way of saying no to things that others are so fond of asking me, and when I tried it for the first time after so many years. I got an insult shut up and stop talking about it if you aren’t gonna do it anyway.

It feels good to remove something that’s been weighing on me, though I need to bear with whatever guilt-tripping (I received one too on the same day) and insults. If I don’t change, my life will stay the same way it was…and I don’t think it’s the right way to live the remaining adulr years that I have.

I hope I’ll eventually become the person that my life deserves to have…someone who cares for himself more than anyone and anything. #lifechange #goalsetting. #betterperson #betterfuture

  • Nope…

Have you ever unintentionally broken the law?

Even a pedestrian law…nope. I was taught to never do bad things if I can’t handle the consequences. Plus, I studied Criminology: Criminal Law and Justice. So no, I respect law and would not want to violate not bend it.

  • #6 PRICED HAPPINESS

    Have you ever?

Feel like you always owe others your happiness? And being happy while they’re not makes you a bad person?

    Guilty for being happy!

    So Asian!

I don’t know about Western people, but I am sure about Asians. Even before we were born, obligations had already been carved. What and who are we going to be has already been decided!

    Obligations!

We were not supposed to stand on our own beliefs and principles, it is as if we are living a theatrical way of life. Our elders narrate the story, of course, according to what and how they wish for it to turn to and we are the actors! We are more likely, puppets, whose moves and words are scripted and provided even before we could speak our first word.

Loving the family is normal, but turning that love into obligation is not something I can be proud of. There are vulgar people, both from my immediate family to lovers. When I smile, I laugh, and I am caught having a good time with friends. They would ask me. WHY ARE YOU HAPPIER WITH OTHER PEOPLE(FRIENDS)? The moment I heard that, I thought to myself. Why do I feel like I have committed a crime for being happy?

    Why though?

Okay, I did reflect and confronted my self regarding the kind of issue some have thrown at me. Why am I at my happiest whenever I am with other people? Why is that? Unfortunately to them, I came up with an answer. An honest answer to my self. But before that, I want to cite an example. A situation that has gotten me into a deep realization.

For not being that obedient and submissive to my older sister, she threw me out of her house. It was painful, it was an insult. But okay, it was her house, her rules so I must abide by that. That was the time I was able to get a grip of my independence at around 85% level.

Instead of sulking and minding what happened, I started doing things that I had been dying to do. Go to church regularly, and rest when I am tired, I have all my time under my control. Was able to balance my work and personal life. I became happier and above all more independent especially emotionally. However, due to favouritism, my mother who always would side with my older sister regardless of her being right or wrong then came and talked things out to me.

For goodness, I have so much respect with my mom that I went to my sister and apologized for taking things seriously. It was against my will, and I knew that I’d be paying another price again…my freedom. Before I was back for good under my sister’s shadow, I told her this. AREN’T YOU PROUD AND HAPPY THAT I HAVE BECOME INDEPENDENT AND CAN HANDLE THINGS ON MY OWN ALREADY? I was proud, I gained my pride and I was proud. But, she was, on the other hand, disappointed staring at me with a blank face. NO, WHY WOULD I WHEN YOU GOT IT AND LEARNT IT FROM OTHER PEOPLE?

That was the moment I realized, my sister wasn’t just placing me under her shadow but eventually intended to make me a puppet that she could control at any time she pleased, a prisoner. Things went on, and I was back to my old life. At her house, I wasn’t allowed to frown, we aren’t even Chinese and she had such rule. I shouldn’t feel sick, even with a running nose and under fever I am obliged to be with her at anywhere she wish to go. I am not allowed to leave her home without her, I was stuck.

    The answer…

I am the happiest with other people or with my friends, I can be crazy, I can have fun, I can throw jokes, I can eat what I want, I can go wherever I want to go, I can be who I am without having to worry of them not liking me for they don’t mind having a crazy fool, sick sometimes, goes home late, get drunk, wears slippers, I can rest, I am loved and accepted. I was and am allowed to just be alive in my way, and it makes me happy to ever feel the freedom that I have longed for so very long.

I don’t feel the need to owe them my joy, obliged to go wherever they wish, I am allowed to make choices on my own. I was allowed to laugh out loud, I was allowed to be just me. For my sister, those things aren’t important. But for me, those things define the real me, those simple things such as being able to rest whenever I am sick and feeling lazy whenever I am too tired to set foot outside. Those are my features, and those are what’s making me feel me.

No strings, no fake smiles, no fake laughs.

    Priced…

My life since I was younger was priced, and the older I get the higher the price is becoming. Whatever I do, I am obliged to submit myself. And it’s making me feel so tired, so damn tired that there are times when I just turn my back on those people who are still making me feel indebted to them. I have already paid them the price, and all I want now is to continue living a warmer life. No fake smiles, no fake happiness…

  • Mobile phone…

The most important invention in your lifetime is…

That brings both convenience and inconvenience to everyone….defines every person at its finest.

  • I’ve cut the habit of reading news and headlines and even current affairs for the longer I am exposed to those things the more I am seeing how the world is getting more and more chaotic. The more I read…the sadder the world is becoming. It’s being torn by greed, selfishness and hypocrisy led by no other than the leaders.

Then…memes regarding Mindanao’s separation from the rest surface. So…I took the chance to read political articles. So…there’s a rift between mighty names in the history of Philippine politics.

I voted for just two presidents since…one for Duterte and one for Marcos. The rest? I just saw them on TV, read on the papers and they share no difference from one another.

I have long accepted the fact that the Philippines can no longer redeem its glory, it never has. In every achievement it gets, a part of it loses its flare. In each part that shines the most, another part of the nation is getting dimmer and darker.

Despite the wars, against Spaniards and the Americans and up until now. The Philippines continues to shrink deeper and deeper in every political successor term, people are divided, and leaders are just using the country as a battlefield for the powerful and greedy buttheads.

A single vote can never determine the difference between the candidates, thus, it’s just another wasted trust from the people. Yellow, Red, Blue and White. Three stars and a sun with eight rays….why do these people choose just one colour while giving promises such as the union of the Philippines, its people and its entity?

When the Philippine emblem cannot stand with the absence of any? I will never regret voting for Marcos or not voting for Lenie….for whoever has won the race…I only got one thing in mind. May this one be as good as the previous one.

I think the Philippines should now consider a candidate too young to be senile and too old to be childish. 

It’s not about how the rain falls, heavy or light you must stand tall. After all…it’s how the story goes than how it starts.
